Juba Nour Sensei 6th Dan, Director and chief instructor from Aikido of Manhattan

Sensei, thank you very much for allow us to make this little interview.

I would like to know how did you start at Aikido

I start to practice Aikido at 19 years old, then I had the chance that the great professor K. Chiba, 8th Dan, invited me as Uchi-deshi for 4 years, in 1983 where I practiced for 4 to 6 hours daily, I did all the fuctions that the Uchi-deshi did at a Dojo, I like to say that in the meantime, Aikido is part of our being and there weren't excuses for not attending the classes or not doing our activities.

After those 4 years of leraning with K. Chiba Sensei, I was too luck and he was too kind to sent me to Tokyo, Japan, under the taughts of the late K. Ueshiba Sensei, I was there for a year, until 1986 I returned to the United States, opened my first school in New Haven, Connecticut (Connecticut Aikikai), I stayed almost 7 years until I decided to continue traveling and learning Aikido, so I left my school to one of my students, Mike Sidebottom Sensei, 4h Dan, so I could continue practicing and instructing Aikido seminars In Europe (Grace, France, England, etc.)

Could you please tell us, after had travelled to Europe what happened before

I return to the Unitaed States, where I founded Aikido of Manhattan in 1995, it was very hard, because Manhattan is very expensive, and the interest had to be created between people, to have commited students. Nowadays I have 40 students, 4 classes are instructed per day, in fact the size of my Dojo is very similar to yours. I have a mixed students population, there are students from Venezuela, Israel, Mexico, USA, etc.

Are you in touch with Hombu Dojo?

Yes, but trough Chiba Sensei.

Sensei, I would like, that you please talk about your experience in this visit to Mexico:

In this few days that I have been in Mexico, my experience is very strong and positive. A warm and generous environment can be felt in this Dojo, people are very kind and nice, with a lot of spirit. Very different from other people from Latin America with I have been in contact. In fact I had the chance once to visited a Dojo in La Paz, Baja Calfinornia, that it is managed by Bob Burns Sensei, also student of the line of Chiba Sensei. I also had been in Costa Rica.

Juba Sensei and Edison Lopez as uke.

Juba Sensei did Kata Gatame.

Sensei, would you like to add a last comment for the people that practice Aikido and will read this interview

Yes, I would like to say that all the members of this organizations have to known that Rocio Sensei and Fernando Sensei have chosen a very hard path, searching the teachings, seeing and doing what have to do. Furthermore I would like to thank the invitation that you made me to come here, in the same way, they and all the members of this organization are welcomed with pleasure, also to stay at our Dojo, although it is not very big, you can use it without problem.

How and when did you start at Aikido?

I begin to practice in 1995, I have been practicing for 10 years, I have made it part of my life, at the begining, I took it as a personal defense method, but I have realized thar it is an art, precise as a piano, that you have to make a fusion between your body, spirit and mind.

Lis

Hi Lissa, please tell us how has been your experience with Juba Sensei.

It has been very intense, with challenges. He ask us a 100% of concentration in each of the classes, he make us to grow up, he puts the best of the persons out. But you have to be very polite and always have very clear that we have to be opened to the learnings, as we don't know anything in each of the practices.

How and when did you start at Aikido?

I am from Israel, but practicaly I have spent all my life in the USA, I started Aikido 3 years ago, now Aikido is like my family, I travel, and share experiences with my partners and I like to know people because is very cosmopolitan, there are students for many nationalities. I practice 3 hours daily, inlcuding the beginers courses.
